Psalm 121:5
5a The LORD is thy keeper:
Yes, there is a "hedge of thorns" surrounding me, and Lord, YOU were the One who put them there! The angels…the angels! They are the "hedge of thorns"! I am reminded of Ps. 91:11-
"For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to KEEP THEE in all thy ways."
There is a WATCHMAN constantly watching over me, too, and it is YOU. You are absolutely THE BEST Watchman there could ever be for You have an "all-seeing eye" that sees everything north, south, east, and west for miles into infinity. Not one single little dart that is
thrown from Satan's quiver goes by without Your notice and permission. Wow!
"As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so (You) are round about (ME) from henceforth even for ever." (Ps. 125:21)
Your all-encircling LOVE pervades. YOU are my KEEPER!
5b the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.
Lord, I couldn't quite figure this verse out till I read Albert Barnes Notes on the Old Testament as follows:
"The Lord is as a shadow: as the shadow of a rock, a house, or a tree, in the intense rays of the burning sun…Perhaps the particular allusion to the right hand here may be that that was the place of a protector. He would thus be at hand, or would be ready to interpose in defense of him whom he was to guard."
Compare: "I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved." (Ps. 16:8)
Or could it be that this verse is especially speaking about Your keeping me from SIN? I did a "double-take" when I looked up the Strong's definition of "shade". It means "excision, i.e. destruction…", and the "right hand" indicates strength and power. Could it be saying that You KEEP my soul by "cutting" the SELF and MY strength and power out of my life? Interesting…chronic illness is a constant "cutting" that keeps me DEPENDENT on You!
